Litt Fest - The Prize Winners !!


Each year the Department of English organizes a fun filled extravaganza for the students of AISC called “Litt Fest”. This year it was held from the 26th of December upto the 28th of December.
Day one started with  Scrabble Marathon where a total of ten teams competed against each other to set the score board ticking. It was Malaika Fernandes and group who won the first prize here, with Humera Qureshi and group taking home the first runner up and Farzeen Khan and Group taking the second runner up position. This year for the first time a new game called “Upwards” was introduced and the competing teams gave each other a run for their money with an intense competition. Ultimately it was UmmeSalma Rangwala and team who emerged victorious.

In the inauguration ceremony Dr. E.M.Khan, Principal, AISC lauded the efforts of the department in bringing all the faculties together and encouraging the students to learn through the various competitions organized. Dr. Shaila Bootwala, Vice Principal, AISC, encouraged the students to come out of their comfort zones and participate in the competitions thereby increasing their self esteem and becoming well rounded personalities.

Post the inauguration it was time for the poetry reading competition. Judged by Prof Anjali Kedari, Head, Department of Psychology, the competition proved to be a real success as the hall resounded with laughter and voices as the participants dished out different genres of poetry.  What was noteworthy was that a lot of students read out renditions of their own works. It was Mr. Ritshi Kanjilal of T.Y.BCom who won the first prize followed by Ms. Malaika Fernandes who was tied with Jovia D’souza of S.Y.B.A at the first runner up position followed by Ishaq Polan of T.Y.B.C.S and Ms. Tasha Patel of S.Y.B.A who given the consolation prize.

Next up was Spelling Bee, the only competition that remotely comes close to academics. Following a written elimination round there followed a slew of rounds where the contestants tried to spell one difficult word after another. It was ultimately Ms. Kanchan Mantri of M.A. II who emerged trumps and Ms. Ummesalma Rangwala from S.Y.B.A who was the runner up. After two more rounds, Ms. Tasha Patel secured the third place.

Day two of Litt Fest that had ‘Leafy Green’ as it’s theme opened with the popular ‘Pictionary’. A overwhelming ten teams participated out of which only four teams progressed to the next round. After highly competitive four rounds it was Ummesalma Rangwala and group who emerged victorious in this exciting competition.

After Pictionary, it was time for ‘Litt Quiz’, a perennial favourite with the students. Conducted by Dr. Pragya Bajpai and Ms Shashwati Soumya, five teams battled it out with each other in a intensely contested competition where they were quizzed on a variety of topics ranging from literature, vocabulary, movies to the ad world.

“Speak Your Mind” is a competition where the students are given a free rein to their thoughts and given weird topics to speak on impromptu. Judged by Prof Uzma Tasneem, Head, Department of Urdu and Prof Vaishali Prabhune, it was Ms. Jovia D’souza from S.Y.B.A who won the first prize for speaking about ‘If I had A Ginnie’ and Ms. Kanchan Mantri won the second prize for ‘A movie her life should resemble’.

 The students were given the theme of ‘Women Writers’ for the poster making competition. The students put up an impressive performance and the posters showcased women writers right from Jane Austen to J.K. Rowling. Judged by Prof Snehal Kulkarni , Ms. Erum Sayyed from T.Y. B.A. won the first prize for her poster, for her effort of bringing together an eclectic mix of the prize winning authors of our time. While the second prize was won by Ms. Farzeen Khan for impressive poster on the Nobel Prize winning author Toni Morrison. The third prize was shared by Ms. Jovia D’souza and Ms. Sabatilice Naorem while Ms. Fatema Dhuliawala from F.Y.B.A. won the consolation prize.

Essay writing requires a sustained writing effort and a lot of entries were received this year for the essay writing competition. Ms. Jovia D’Souza from S.Y.B.A. won the first prize, while Ms. Tasha Patel from S.Y.B.A won the first runner up position and Ms. Humera Qureshi from T.Y.B.A won the second runner up prize.
On day three, Litt Fest reached a crescendo with the 'Dramatrix' competition with as many as six entries this year. While the M.A. II students did a play reading of Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie, the second year B.A. students did a wonderful rendition of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance Of Being Earnest for which they won the first prize in this competition that was judged by Prof Shoukat Khan, Head, Department of History. The second prize was won by Ms. Farzeen Khan and group for their short comic play titled Restaurant. While the third prize was won by Mr. Ishaq Polan and group for their excellent two minute play titled Car.

Dr. P.K. Sinha, Former Head, Department of English, University of Pune, was invited as the chief guest at the Prize distribution and Valedictory ceremony held later. He lauded the various activities and suggested the addition of a creative writing competition to enhance the creative abilities of the students.

With some awesome classics and modern day bestsellers as prizes the suspense of who the Litt Whiz was only intensified. The applause was deafening as Ms. Jovia D’souza of SY.B.A. was announced as the Litt Whiz of 2011-12. The Litt Whiz is a special prize instituted by the Dr. E.M. Khan, Principal, AISC for the participant winning the maximum number of prizes at the Litt fest, where the winner gets a trophy, a cash prize and a trophy.
